Details
A super funky cucumber relative great for kids’ gardens, snacking, and pickling! Believed to be native to Africa and introduced to the Caribbean and eventually the U.S. in the 1700s. Pickled and boiled by the colonists in Jamaica, and a favorite of 3rd president Thomas Jefferson who was known to be a lover of pickled gherkins. The plants produce very beautiful long vines and hundreds of 2" oval, spikey, and flavorful cucumbers. Grows well in hot, humid weather. Yields better than any other cucumber. Will not cross with traditional cucumbers. Growing Burr gherkins is fun and makes an interesting garden addition for those who love pickles or wish to add interest to soups and stir-fries. They have a unique and refreshing flavor, with a lovely crisp bite. Used young and whole, they are a delicious and unique addition to a salad. As they mature, the spikes and skin become a little tough and they fruit requires peeling, although the flavor of the flesh does improve with maturity.
