Details
Valerian, belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family, thrives in full sun and well-drained soils, its roots sought for teas and medicinal use. While its pink blooms emit a pleasant fragrance, the roots hold a pungent aroma. Growing up to five feet tall, its fern-like foliage adds ornamental charm. Cats are attracted to it akin to catnip. Easily cultivated from seed, it sprouts within two weeks when sown directly outdoors after the last frost. Valerian has been prized for its medicinal properties, its root oil aiding in insomnia, migraines, and anxiety, while its blooms were once used in perfumes. An adaptable herb, it adds both visual appeal and herbal benefits to gardens, making it a popular choice for herbal teas and ornamental gardens alike.
