The San Marzano Long 2 Tomato is an improved strain of the classic Italian heirloom, revered worldwide for its exceptional quality in paste, sauce, and canning applications. Developed in Parma, Italy, during the 1950s for the canning industry, this variety combines the Old World flavor and efficiency of traditional San Marzano tomatoes with modern reliability and productivity.
This indeterminate variety produces abundant clusters of elongated, cylindrical fruits measuring 4–5 inches long and weighing 4–6 ounces each. The fruits ripen to a vibrant red, hold well on the vine, and are resistant to cracking, making them ideal for harvesting and storage. Their thick, meaty flesh and minimal seeds make for quicker boiling times, making them perfect for transforming into rich tomato sauces, pastes, and other cooked preparations. While less suited for fresh eating due to their mild flavor, their cooking potential is unparalleled.
The plants have robust, regular-leaf foliage that provides good cover, helping to protect the fruit as it matures. This improved strain, selected by tomato breeder Emily Rose Haga from the USDA gene bank, ensures genetic diversity while preserving the traditional shape, texture, and culinary excellence of this beloved variety.
