Details

This native prairie perennial is a desirable range plant, eaten by many livestock. It was named for the naturalist Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied, Germany, who led an expedition into the American West in the 1830s. These plants are mainly found from Manitoba to Texas but are also found scattered throughout the tall grass prairie. Each plant produces an abundance of bright yellow flowers in the fall and blooms for about 5 weeks. Bees and monarch butterflies stop to enjoy them on their way south and goldfinches feast on the seeds from mid-October to mid-November. If you don’t mind tall, wild looking plants, prairie sunflowers will be a great addition to your garden. If you like shorter, bushier plants, you can pinch off the growing tips when they are about 3 or 4 feet tall.
