Details

A dwarfing rootstock that is 35% of standard with multiple disease resistances and winter hardiness.

G.214 is an outstanding dwarfing rootstock for high-density planting, particularly for the most vigorous of varieties. It can be used in place of G.16 in regions where woolly apple aphid is a challenge, and it will support highly productive trees. This rootstock is very resistant to fireblight and WAA, and tolerant of collar rot and replant disease, making it a good replacement for M.9 on replant sites. G.214 is a cross of Robusta 5 and Ottawa 3. It is not virus senstitive so virus clean scionwood is not necessary. Trees grown on this rootstock should be supported to reach their full fruiting potential.  The graft union is strong compared to that of G.41.

Recommended high-density planting for weak-growing cultivars is 3-3.5' x 11-12' (1320-1037 trees/acre), and for vigorous cultivars it is 3.5-4.0' x 12-13' (1037-839 trees/acre).

G.214 comes from the Geneva, NY breeding program, developed by Dr. Jim Cummins.
